Historic preservation scholar Jeremy C. Well examines the critical disconnect between how people experience older (e.g., “historic”) places and the public policies that govern them. While aged environments possess a distinct psychological and emotional power rooted in environmental senescence – captured through the framework of Being Affected by Old Places (BAOP) – the professional preservation field focuses primarily on regulatory compliance, which excludes these human factors. Public preservation policy, spanning statutes, rules, and guidelines, has long been frozen into an object-centric system focused strictly on physical fabric and art-historical facts. Consequently, existing policy fails to reflect how non-experts actually interact with older environments, systematically ignoring people- and human-centered meanings, perceptions and values. This presentation explores how public preservation policy operates in practice and demonstrates how practitioners, policymakers, planners, legal experts and advocates can craft truly human-centered policies. By leveraging empirical social science research, participatory action research, and informed legal strategies, preservationists can reorient policy to prioritize lived experience, local knowledge and the authentic human impact of old places.

Art historian Tamara Smithers, an alumna of the College of Charleston, will discuss highlights of her book The Cults of Raphael and Michelangelo: Artistic Sainthood and Memorialization as a Second Life (2023), which explores the phenomenon of the fervent cult following of Renaissance artists in relation to their death, burial and posthumous fame. She will also discuss her recent transition to focus research on present-day Native American art, centering discussion on themes of rematriation and Indigenization, terms used to describe restoration of ancestral relationships and a return to Indigenous-centered thinking.

A meditation on how power imbalances affect personal and interpersonal dynamics across a spectrum of situations, Passage is set in the fictional Country X, a neocolonial client of Country Y. Characters B, a local doctor, and F, an expat teacher, begin to forge a friendship that is challenged after a fateful trip to a local attraction. Exploring dynamics of people from opposing countries, this provocative and thoughtful play examines colonization past and present. Recommended for audiences aged 16 and up (mature themes, discussions of colonialism, power imbalance, violence and implied sexual violence).

Directed by Todd McNerney

Described by Edward Albee as “the greatest American play ever written,” Our Town presents the small town of Grover’s Corners in three acts: “Daily Life,” “Love and Marriage” and “Death and Eternity.” Narrated by a stage manager and performed with minimal props and sets, the play depicts the simple daily lives of the Webb and Gibbs families as their children fall in love, marry and eventually – in one of the most famous scenes in American theatre – die. Thornton Wilder's final word on how he wanted his play performed is an invaluable addition to the American stage and to the libraries of theatre lovers internationally. Recommended for audiences aged 14 and up (mature themes including substance use, death and suicide).
