Langston Hughes’ character Jesse B. Semple reflects on the everyday lives and opinions
present within working-class African American communities in his Chicago Defender
column, “Here To Yonder.” Presented as an everyman familiar with communities throughout
the United States, Semple also comments on the real and imagined solidarities between Black
and Indigenous communities. In this talk, DeLisa D. Hawkes will discuss how Langston
Hughes’ Simple stories reflect on Black and Indigenous solidarities and the value of the
Simple stories to thinking about the intersections between African American studies and
Native American and Indigenous studies.
