Faculty Lecture Series: "Studying the Origins of Function in Small Polypeptides," with Michael Giuliano, Associate Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry

Join associate professor and bioorganic chemist Michael Giuliano for a talk and discussion illustrating a chemist’s approach to answering questions in biology and medicine.

Giuliano’s laboratory has been studying the three-dimensional shape of the small chains of amino acids – peptides – that carry chemical messages between our cells. Specifically, they chemically synthesize members of the family of molecules known as neuropeptides, which act predominantly in the central nervous system, and then use a wide variety of experimental and computational techniques to determine their three-dimensional structure.

Come learn how to make peptides and proteins outside of living things, how chemists use spectroscopy to “see” molecules, and why understanding molecular shape matters so much to contemporary efforts to design new medicines.

This event is part of the Faculty Lecture Series presented by the College's Friends of the Library and the Honors College.

The talk is free and open to all, no registration required. Free lunch will be provided, and all are welcome. No prior molecular knowledge necessary!
